The Spoken Word

by Mohd Farid

Social Worker Farid demonstrates the use of the Spoken Word, poetry intended for onstage performance rather than just written for the page. Whilst often associated with hip hop culture, it has ties to storytelling, modern poetry, post modern performance, and monologue theatre, as well as jazz, blues, and folk music.

With its ability to directly engage the audience and create direct rapport, Spoken Word poetry often contains references to current events and issues relevant to the contemporary audience.

Hence its potential as a powerful medium of expression that could be utilised to engage youths in the community to participate in discourse and express their views in issues of interest.
